Grilling Vegan Style: 125 Fired-Up Recipes to Turn Every Bite into a Backyard BBQ by John Schlimm

Close your eyes and imagine it is the middle of the summer. Imagine again you have the grill fired up, and you want to happily grill away with something that tastes just as good as it is good for you. John Schlimm does that and more in Grilling Vegan Style, and as with Sclimm’s other cookbooks, you don’t need to be a vegan to enjoy the recipes.

This vegan-friendly grilling primer opens the doors to other things to grill besides beef, poultry, and other meats. Schlimm covers grilling tempeh, tofu and seitan, and provides tips and how-to guides for each. He also addresses how to choose vegan burgers and hot dogs and reminds the reader that as is the case with all processed foods, a quick check on the label will indicate whether an item is in fact simply vegetarian or actually vegan. And just because it says ‘vegan’ doesn’t mean it will be salt-free or preservative-free.

Recipes: Classic Combinations and New Treats

The recipes inside are colorful, family friendly, and the flavor combinations are both classic and new. For example, The Blue Pear is a recipe for a grilled sandwich, meaning you actually grill the assembled sandwich, which is made with the classic pairing of crumbled blue cheese, sliced pears, and served drizzled with pure maple syrup. Shishito peppers have recently been used in overabundance in my household (I’m addicted to them…) and I was pleasantly surprised to find Shishito Heat Wave, a super easy recipe for these peppers on the grill.

I loved all his recipes for his veggie burgers but the Garbonzo & Herb Burgers with Creamy Lemon Tahini Sauce was my favorite. There are many recipes for tofu and tempeh marinades. The accompaniment sauces for some dishes could be used for other things such as the Homemade Vegan Worcestershire Sauce and the Homemade Vegan Sour Cream. Recipes I want to try include the Vanilla, I Scream! frozen dessert made of Coco Lopez, silken tofu, and vanilla-flavored vodka. There are 125 recipes in all divided by meal.

Grilling Vegan Style provides something for everyone: the recipes are healthful; the tips for grilling hard-to-grill items like tofu, tempeh, and seitan are spot on; and there are no shortage of new ways for old combinations. The photographs by Amy Beadle Roth are just icing on the cake.
