The Sugar Detox by Brooke Alpert and Patricia Farris

The Sugar Detox begins with the quiz “Are You a Sugar Addict?” While I scored low and like to think of myself as a healthy eater, I am surprised at the amounts of hidden sugar in products all around me and my family. This book gives readers a way to detoxify their bodies through a three-day sugar detox plan designed solely to get sugar out of their systems. The authors write in the intro:

We created the Sugar Detox to help our patients reach their goals. It is a unique multidiscipline approach that will allow you to look and feel better from the inside out and the outside in.

There are four parts to this book: The Sugar-Free Prescription; Everything You Need to About the Sugar Detox; The Plan; and A Place at the Table. The book includes a 3-Day Sugar Fix diet and recipe plan and a 31-Day Plan.

And if you thought that sugar only affects the internal parts of the body, Sugar Detox goes into nutricosmetics, the study of how nutrition and the diet affect the appearance and the skin. While you are giving your body a sugar detox, give your skin the authors’ recommended 3-Day Skin Fix at the same time. These are “soothing, spa like treatments that can be done in the comfort of your own home,” and include recipes for beauty baths, do-it-yourself beauty masks, and recommended products to purchase.

I found surprising facts throughout this book, the most intriguing was that ‘natural sugars’ and refined sugars are simply that: sugars, lumped into the same category. Just because you substitute one for the other (like using agave syrup, brown sugar, or honey in place of regular granulated sugar), this doesn’t equate to a more ‘healthy’ choice. Sugar is sugar so treat it that way.

By detoxing the body from the inside out, you’ll feel better, look better, and may shed a few pounds along the way. But don’t mistake this as an easy-fix diet – it is intensive and meant to break the reader of a sugar habit. It does not give you easy white sugar substitutions for sugar-laden recipes. It focuses on getting sugar out of the diet. A recommended read for anyone who is dependent on sugar.
